Hear Christ's Voice Through the Word

Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God." Matthew 22:29, NKJV.

The voice of God is speaking to us through His Word, and there are many voices that we will hear; but Christ has said we should beware of them who will say, Here is Christ or there is Christ. Then how shall we know that they have not the truth, unless we bring everything to the Scriptures? Christ has warned us to beware of false prophets who will come to us in His name, saying that they are Christ.

Now, if you should take the position that it is not important for you to understand the Scriptures for yourselves, you will be in danger of being led away with these doctrines. Christ has said that there will be a company who in the day of retributive judgment will say, "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?" But Christ will say, "Depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Now, we want to understand what sin is; that it is the transgression of God's law. This is the only definition given in the Scriptures. Therefore we see that those who claim to be led of God, and go right away from Him and His law, do not search the Scriptures. But the Lord will lead His people; for He says that His sheep will follow if they hear His voice, but a stranger will they not follow. Then it becomes us to thoroughly understand the Scriptures. And we will not have to inquire whether others have the truth; for it will be seen in their characters.

The time is coming when Satan will work miracles right in your sight, claiming that he is Christ; and if your feet are not firmly established upon the truth of God, then you will be led away from your foundation. The only safety for you is to search for the truth as for hid treasures. Dig for the truth as you would for treasures in the earth, and present the Word of God, the Bible, before your heavenly Father, and say, Enlighten me; teach me what is truth. And when His Holy Spirit shall come into your hearts, to impress the truth into your souls, you will not let it go easily. - The Review and Herald, April 3, 1888.

We Are Objects Of Infinite Love

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ. Eph. 2:4, 5.

The heart surrendered to God’s wise discipline will trust every working out of His providence. . . . Temptation will come to discourage, but what is gained by yielding to any such temptations? Is the soul made any better by murmuring and complaining of its only source of strength? Is the anchor cast within the vail. Will it hold in sickness? Will it be the testimony borne in the last closing scenes of life when the lips are becoming palsied with death? The anchor holds! I know that my Redeemer liveth. . . .

O Precious, loving, long-suffering, long-forbearing Jesus, how my soul adores Thee! That a poor, unworthy, sin-polluted soul can stand before the Holy God, complete in the righteousness of our Substitute and Surety! Wonder, O Heavens, and be astonished, O earth, that fallen man is the object of His infinite love and delight. He rejoices over them with celestial songs, and man defiled with sin, having become cleansed through the righteousness of Christ, is presented to the Father free from every spot and stain of sin, “not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing” (Eph. 5:27). “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth” (Rom. 8:33).

Let every weak, tempest-tossed soul find anchorage in Jesus Christ and not become so self-centered that he can think only of his little disappointments and the interruption of his plans and hopes. Is not the subject of the plan of salvation all-absorbing? If the infinite God justifies me, “who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died” (verse 34). He has in His dying for man revealed how much He loves man—enough to die for Him! The law condemns the sinner and drives him to Christ. It is God that justifies and pardons.

Satan will accuse and seek permission to destroy, but it is God that opens the door of refuge. It is God that justifieth him that entereth that door. Then if God be for us, who can be against us? Oh, the bright glorious truth. Why do not men discern it? Why not walk in its bright beams? Why do not all who believe talk of Christ’s matchless love? . . .

God lives and reigns. All who are saved must fight manfully as soldiers of Jesus Christ; then they will be registered in heaven’s books as true and faithful. They are to work the works of Jesus Christ, fight the good fight of faith.

Para encontrar verdadera felicidad, obedecer a Dios

Estas bendiciones tuve porque guardé tus mandamientos. Salmos 119:56.

Debemos buscar la felicidad en la forma correcta, y en la fuente correcta. Algunos piensan que seguramente pueden encontrar la felicidad en una conducta de satisfacción en placeres pecaminosos, o en atracciones mundanales engañosas. Y algunos sacrifican obligaciones físicas y morales pensando encontrar felicidad, y pierden tanto el alma como el cuerpo. Otros buscarán su felicidad en la complacencia de un apetito desnaturalizado, y consideran la complacencia del gusto más deseable que la salud y la vida. Muchos se permiten estar encadenados por pasiones sensuales y sacrifican la fuerza física, el intelecto y los poderes de la mente en la gratificación del placer. Descenderán prematuramente a la tumba, y en el juicio serán acusados de haberse asesinado.

¿Es deseable esta... felicidad que se encuentra en el sendero de la desobediencia y de la transgresión de la ley física y moral? La vida de Cristo señala la verdadera fuente de felicidad, y de qué manera debe alcanzarse. Su vida señala el camino directo y único al cielo.

Escuchemos la voz de la sabiduría. Permitamos que marque nuestra senda. “Sus caminos son caminos deleitosos, y todas sus veredas paz”. Proverbios 3:17.

Las tentaciones están a cada lado para atraer los pasos de los jóvenes hacia su ruina. La triste deficiencia en la educación de los hijos los deja débiles e indefensos, fluctuantes en carácter, flojos en intelecto y deficientes en fortaleza moral, de tal manera que lejos de imitar la vida de Cristo, generalmente los jóvenes son semejantes a una caña que se estremece por el viento. No tienen constitución física o poder moral porque ceden a las tentaciones. Por medio de complacencias pecaminosas, mancillan su pureza, y sus modales están corrompidos. Son intolerantes hacia las limitaciones, y se lisonjean de que si pudieran hacer lo que quisieran, entonces serían muy felices...

Si los niños y los jóvenes quisieran buscar su bien terrenal más elevado, deben buscarlo en la senda de la obediencia fiel. Un estado físico sano, que es el mayor premio terrenal, puede obtenerse sólo por medio de una negación del apetito antinatural. Si en verdad quisieran ser felices, deberían buscar alegremente estar en el puesto del deber, haciendo con fidelidad la obra que les corresponde, conformando su corazón y vida al modelo perfecto.— The Youth’s Instructor, abril de 1872.

Do Not Merely Read the Scriptures, but Search

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. John 5:39, NKJV.

We are thankful that we have a sure word of prophecy, so that none of us need be deceived. We know that there are heresies and fables in our world at the present time, and we want to know what is truth. It becomes us to search carefully for ourselves that we may gain this knowledge. We cannot do this with a mere reading of the Scriptures, but we must compare scripture with scripture.

We must search the Scriptures for ourselves, so that we shall not be led astray; and while many may be led astray because there are all kinds of doctrines in our world, there is one truth. Many may come to you and tell you that they have the truth, but it is your privilege to search the Scriptures for yourself. "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." We must be acquainted with the Scriptures ourselves, that we may understand the true reason of the hope that is within us.

The apostle tells us that we are to give to everyone that asks us a reason of the hope that is within us, with meekness and fear. "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." It is not enough to merely read, but the Word of God must enter into our hearts and our understanding, in order that we may be established in the blessed truth. If we should neglect to search the Scriptures for ourselves, that we may know what is truth, then if we are led astray we are accountable for it. We must search the Scriptures carefully, so that we will know every condition that the Lord has given us; and if we have minds of limited capacity, by diligently searching the Word of God we may become mighty in the Scriptures, and may explain them to others.

Every church that shall be raised up ... should be educated in regard to this truth. "The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few." The teachers that shall present the truth cannot stand by you to see that you do not embrace the errors that are flooding our land; but if you are established in the Scriptures, you will feel the responsibility and will search the Scriptures for yourselves, so that you may be a help to others. - The Review and Herald, April 3, 1888.
